City have abandoned their chase for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani
MANCHESTER City have emerged as shock contenders in the fight to grab Liverpool’s wantaway striker Luis Suarez for £40million.
But City could offer the Uruguayan the Champions League football he craves, while adding much-needed attacking firepower if Carlos Tevez leaves for AC Milan or Juventus.
City have abandoned their chase for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, 26 with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis saying: “Manchester City do not have money to pay. They say, ‘We won’t pay that’. Abu Dhabi say they would never pay 63 million euros (£54m) for Cavani.”
So City are set to switch their attention to fellow Uruguayan Suarez, 26, who is also a target for former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli.
Chelsea are also still in the race for the services of the striker who still has six matches to sit out after being given a 10-game ban for biting Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic.
