United showed no signs of missing unsettled striker Wayne Rooney as they comfortably swept aside their Championship opposition, who were making their first appearance in the season opening showpiece.
A superbly taken header early in the first-half and a defected strike with half-an-hour remaining from Van Persie sealed victory for United.
Worryingly for United Rafael and Wilfried Zaha were taken off injured and are doubts for the start of their Premier League title defence next Saturday away at Swansea City.
“Moyes selected Van Persie, Danny Welbeck and new signing Zaha in attacking starting 11 for United”
Moyes selected Van Persie, Danny Welbeck and new signing Zaha in attacking starting 11 for United.
The Reds started well and were in front within 10 minutes as Van Persie lost his marker to meet Patrice Evra's cross and head past a helpless Scott Carson in the Wigan goal.
United could have doubled their lead, however Carson was equal to Welbeck's attempt after he had received a well weighted pass from Tom Cleverley.
Just before half-time Wigan were unlucky not to draw level as Leon Barnett was inches away from turning in Emmerson Boyce's knock-down.
Van Persie sealed United's victory with his second of the game as his low shot from outside the box took a deflection of Wigan defender James Perch and past Carson.
One concern for Moyes as he prepares for next week's big kick-off will be the injuries sustained by Rafael and Zaha, who both limped off for United.
Both were replaced and will be assessed in the coming days as United aim for a successful start to their league campaign.
