ZINEDINE ZIDANE stepped up Real Madrid's pursuit of Gareth Bale yesterday.

The Bernabeu outfit's director of football admitted he had followed Spurs this season, but only because he wanted to watch £50m-rated Bale.

And Zidane said the Tottenham star was "more than good enough" for the Spanish giants.

Bale, who has scooped three awards for his brilliant displays this season, is set to be offered a £150,000-a-week new contract at White Hart Lane.

But, as Starsport revealed earlier this week, the Spanish outfit are not giving up on the 23-year-old Welshman in a bid to link him in a sensational strike force with ex-Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Big, talented players like that can always go to Real Madrid," said Zidane, 40, who was World Footballer of the Year three times.

"He is more than good enough play play for Real Madrid.

"I have actually been watching Tottenham for the very reason that Gareth Bale was playing.

"Aside, obviously, from people like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - who are top, top players - he is the footballer who impressed me most, I must admit.

"He particularly impressed me because he was so consistent.

"He wasn't great in one or two matches, he actually was a good player all the time.

"He scored goals all the time, including very important goals.

"He has been very, very impressive."

Zidane's former France team-mate Marcel Desailly has insisted Bale should leave north London for a club that has a "culture of victory".

"He should go, he should just go. Tottenham will not give him the opportunity to play at a very high level," said Desailly.

"There's no price for experience. I think it's the time for him to go.

"He needs to discover, as David Beckham has done, that an English guy or a Welsh guy has the capacity to export himself.

"It's not a matter of money because he has it where he is at Tottenham - it's just the experience.

"Experience to play at a very high level at a club that has the culture of victory, a club that has trophies in the cupboard - not one or two, but plenty.

"To experience playing with other big players, to be maybe a second choice."
