Desmond Tutu's House Burgled During His Prayer at Mandela's Memorial Service

Anti-apartheid icon and the retired Anglican archbishop, Desmond Tutu, was giving a blessing at the ceremony when his home was broken into for the second time in recent months.

Desmond Tutu was burgled yesterday while he was speaking at Nelson Mandela's memorial service.
He was among politicians, dignitaries, and 80,000 ordinary South Africans who attended the four-hour commemorative event at the FNB Stadium, and gave a blessing at the end of the service.
The thieves apparently targeted his home in the suburbs of Cape Town in the knowledge that he was more than 800 miles away at the ceremony in Johannesburg.
It is not yet known what was stolen, but South African police said the burglary happened between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesday evening. No arrests have yet been made.
"I can confirm that there was a burglary last night. We are not able to tell exactly what was stolen, the archbishop and his wife were not at home. The house was not pillaged." his aide Roger Friedman said today.Desmond Tutu's House Burgled During His Prayer at Mandela's Memorial Service

Officers refused to confirm whether or not anything had been taken from the home of Mr Tutu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
Mr Tutu, 82, gave the closing prayers at yesterday's ceremony to the former president in Johannesburg's FNB Stadium.
He urged South Africans to follow Mandela's example, saying: 'I want to show the world we can come out here and celebrate the life of an icon.'

Today, thousands of South Africans have been lining the streets of the capital Pretoria, as Mandela's coffin was driven through to the government's union buildings where he will lie in state for three days.
Mandela's family and VIPs have this morning been to view his glass-topped coffin, before members of the public are allowed to file past to pay their respects over the coming days.
Mandela will be buried with a state funeral on Sunday.
It is the second time in three months that the former Archbishop of Cape Town has been the victim of thieves.
In the previous break-in, on August 7, thieves broke in to the house while the bishop and his wife Leah were sleeping, and took a number of small possessions.
Burglaries are fairly common in South Africa, where they are known as 'home invasions', due to the country's extreme inequality and relatively weak government.

Does PDP Really Need Igbos? I'm Not Sure - Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State recently held a media chat with some journalists in the state. He shed light on many state and national issues.

Media Chat With Okorocha: PDP Has No Plan For Igbos
Excerpts: What would be your next political ambition come 2015, are you going for re-election as governor or aspiring for the presidency?
Let me make this point clear that I’m a member of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA); that is my party there is no controversy about it.
APGA still remains my cultural party because for an Igbo man, APGA represents a way of life, but it is not a national political party. If you may recall APGA became divided.
One APGA looked towards the side of PDP and the other that I was a member looked towards APC.
I was in APGA as political party but now I am in APC and for one reason if you may recall Action Congress of Nigeria ACN, Congress for Progressive Change CPC, All Nigeria Peoples Party ANPP were a regional party, and all these parties came together to form a national party to challenge PDP.
So it would sound very phony to have APGA as a regional party when others have merged for a common purpose. So the wisest thing do was to merge with APC and the remaining APGA are in PDP.
For me APC is good for the South East because from the way political equation is structured in Nigeria, it doesn’t appear to me that PDP has any plan for Ndi Igbo.

Nelson Mandela Memorial: Sign Interpreter Was Fake (Photos)

The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was "a fake who merely flapped his arms around during speeches", South Africa's deaf community has said.

Nelson Mandela Memorial: Sign Interpreter Was Fake
South Africa's deaf federation has confirmed that an interpreter using sign language during the Mandela memorial was a "fake".
Concerns over the male interpreter had been raised by deaf people watching the service at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
Bruno Druchen, national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa, said the unidentified man who was on stage alongside world leaders including US President Barack Obama, "was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for".
South African parliament member Wilma Newhoudt, a member of the ruling party, also said the man communicated nothing with his hand and arm movement.
Both Mr Druchen and Ms Newhoudt are deaf.
Nelson Mandela Memorial: Sign Interpreter Was Fake
"He's a complete fraud," said Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town.
"He wasn't even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around."
The interpreter, who translated US president Barack Obama's speech, looked as if he was "trying to swat a few flies away from his face and his head".
"The deaf community in South Africa are completely outraged and nobody knows who he is," Ms Loening said.
"We can't find a name or anything. The organisations who have accredited interpreters do not know him at all."

"JONATHAN AIDS CORRUPTION": How Speaker Tambuwal's Remarks Divided Nigeria

photo - Politics React To Tambuwal's "JONATHAN AIDS CORRUPTION" Remarks
In his recent remarks, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, accused the Nigerian Government's executive arm of inability to expose and fight corruption, and alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was also wallowed in venal practices. Ever since Tambuwal had spoken at the 2013 International Anti-corruption Day, organised by the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja, politics have been expressing their mixed opinions concerning his remarks.

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, leading rights crusader and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), advised President Goodluck Jonathan to focus on eliminating corrupt practices rather than to take Tambuwal's statement "in bad taste".
The statement, although not verified, Dr. Agbakoba noted, comes from "the fourth man in government".

Nigeria’s Existence Will Expire On December 31, 2013, Will We Decide to Extend it?

A new test to Nigeria’s sovereign status is in full play as Movement for New Nigeria has stated its intention to challenge the legality of the 1914 Amalgamation ordinance which gave birth to the Nigerian state.

Nigeria’s Existence Will Expire On December 31, 2013, Will We Decide to Extend it?
The amalgamation ordinance is expected to expire on December 31, 2013, as MNN is set to take a legal action to ensure that a new union treaty was negotiated and entered into by the various nationalities that make up the country known as Nigeria.
Participants at Vanguard Conference Hall said the legal basis of Nigeria’s existence will expire on December 31, 2013.
"We ought to agree either to extend it or not. Yet some people are hoodwinking Nigerians and drawing billions of naira to prepare for a bash in a union that may not exist beyond December 31, 2013.”
The Secretary General of MNN, Mr. Tony Nnadi, said: “Contrary to the false impression being peddled by some people that “the basis of Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable, we want to state categorically that such assertions are wrong and mischievous display of ignorance, especially by those who feel that they are benefiting from the illegal contraption of the colonist and jihadist expansionists, whose interests collided in the process of the scramble for territories and resources, belonging to Lower Niger Region.

"I'm Just A Poor Jobless Pensioner, Would You Hire Me?" - Remembering Mandela's SENSE OF HUMOR

photo - "I'm Just A Poor Jobless Pensioner, Would You Hire Me?" - Remembering Mandela's SENSE OF HUMOR
Nelson Mandela was many things to many people, but his sense of humor, his dry wit and his remarkable ability to render someone speechless with a well-placed one-liner, is a separate topic worth to be remembered.
He was not the kind of man to fall over in laughter or to guffaw loudly. He did not make silly gaffes, inappropriate innuendos or stupid jokes. Instead, just like the rest of him, his humor was dignified, statesmanlike and perhaps a little old-fashioned.
Some of Mandela's jokes were well-used and a bit cheesy, but that did not detract from their simplicity and effectiveness.
He had a small arsenal of one-liners he used for different people.
If he met a married couple, he demanded to know from the lady, "When did you propose to your husband?"
Of course, for Mandela, with his early 20th century, patriarchal value system, it was hugely amusing to imagine anything as audacious as a woman asking a man to marry her. And of course, his question was always met with nervous, unnaturally loud laughter that broke the ice.
Either way, Mandela won over foes, disarmed critics and charmed the media with his cutesy, gee-whiz humor.
Besides the jokes, he could also lather complete strangers with devastatingly flattering compliments. He often said to those whose lives are not distinguished by public office or marked by accolades, "I am so honored to meet you."
More often than not, he would poke fun at himself with classic comic timing. He would often start off a speech by thanking everyone for coming to listen to "such an old man."
Later, after he stood down after one term as South African president, he won over a group of staid, white South African businessmen by telling them, "Nowadays, I am just a poor pensioner. I am jobless. Maybe you could hire me?"
Self-mockery was a typically savvy Mandela ploy to ensure that people would relax around him.
The cult of Mandela had become so pronounced that celebrities, world leaders and ordinary people often became tongue-tied and gibbering when they met him.
So, joking about his failings or mistakes was just another way of Mandela saying: "Chill! I'm cool. Relax."
Mandela walked with a ramrod gait, straight-backed and stiff. Over the years, many people meet him for the first time, and without exception, they came away from the encounter amazed at how tall and regal-looking he was.
Only children seemed unintimidated by his height and fame. There is something about Mandela that kids loved.
Little children would run to him without knowing why they were doing it and toddlers rustle around his legs like purring kittens. For them, and even us adults, perhaps he was like a smiling South African Santa Claus?
The feeling was mutual. Mandela mined children for their opinions and views of the world. He seemed to relish their brutal honesty and innocent humor.
One of Mandela's favorite anecdotes -- often told in public -- was of a conversation he had with a 4-year-old girl who asked him how old he was. Mandela replied, "I can't remember, but I was born long, long ago." She then asked him why he went to jail. Mandela replied, "I didn't go there because I liked it. Some people sent me there." She asked how long he had been in jail. Mandela again replied, "I can't remember, but it was a long, long time." Mandela then relays to his audience that after a thoughtful pause the little girl said, "You are a stupid old man, aren't you?"
Mandela's good humor and jovial demeanor were not just a public ploy to charm crowds or disarm nervous guests. He used it to great effect in his political life.
A familiar story in South Africa is how, during multiparty negotiations before the 1994 democratic election, he would often gently tease the leader of a rightwing Afrikaner party, Gen. Constant Viljoen, by saying, "We have to let the white man talk; after all, he is from the supreme race."
Again, a slightly naughty, cheeky grin would subsequently appear, by which time the chilly, racially charged atmosphere would have been warmed up by nervous laughter.
For Mandela, sports were a major weapon against racism
Mandela even amused the British royal family with his casual, overfamiliarity with the Queen, whom he called "Elizabeth" and not "Your Majesty."
It was a deliberate snub against pomp and protocol for the simple, humble Mandela. "Well, she calls me Nelson," was his repost, when one of his grandchildren asked if it was not perhaps in bad form to call the Queen by her first name.
One only wonders the response from the British establishment when Mandela complemented "Elizabeth" on her figure; "Why, Elizabeth, you've lost weight!" he reportedly said to the famously stiff-upper-lipped monarch.
Mandela's humor was centered in his inherent sense of self. He played the fool or jester sometimes, all the while knowing that he was fundamentally deeply content with himself.
While some leaders flounder with self-doubt, or others primp with self-congratulations, Mandela was merely a twinkle away from nudging you in the ribs with a self-knowing smile.
South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died at age 95, South Africa's president announced on Dec. 5, 2013.
Mandela's funeral will be held on Dec. 15 in South Africa, following 10 days of mourning, President Jacob Zuma announced today. A memorial service will be held at Soccer City in Soweto on Dec. 10, and Mandela's body will lie in state from Dec. 11 through the 13th.

Hull's Steve Bruce joins the British boys in the top flight

STEVE BRUCE is back in the Premier League and hoping to fly the flag for British bosses.

Steve Bruce, Hull, BritainSteve Bruce's arrival to the Premier League brings the total number of British and Irish managers in the top flight to 11
The Hull manager, who takes his team to Chelsea tomorrow, was written off after being sacked by Sunderland but led the Tigers back to the big time in his first season in charge.
Bruce brings the British and Irish contingent of Premier League bosses up to 11 – over half the division. Only Manchester United’s David Moyes has had more top-flight experience among the Brits.
Bruce, who also guided Wigan and Birmingham to impressive Premier League finishes, said: “I’ve been fortunate because there’s not many British managers who have done 10 years in the Premier League. You take a big pride about that and if you’ve got anything about you, it’s where you want to be.
“I’m delighted to be back. You miss the big time”

“It’s going to be remarkably difficult but I’m looking forward to it immensely. One of my coaches said there’s been a crackle about the place and he was right.”
Bruce is set to give debuts to Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore, the midfielders signed from Tottenham, the latter on loan.
Scotland keeper Allan McGregor, defenders Curtis Davies and Maynor Figueroa and forward Danny Graham are all likely to make their first league starts for the club.
History is not with Hull, who have not won on any of their 19 visits to Chelsea, over more than a century.

Jose Mourinho takes swipe at Chelsea's Premier League rivals

JOSE MOURINHO kicked off the Premier League mind games with a swipe at Manchester United and Manchester City - and declared he is back to win the title in style.

Jose Mourinho, ChelseaJose Mourinho wants to dominate the League on his first year back
The Chelsea boss claims the Manchester duo, the past two champions, were far from brilliant and only finished top because everybody else made mistakes. He said: "A few years ago, the better teams were better. I think that.
"You think Manchester United won the Premier League last year because they were an unbelievable team? I don't think so.
"The other contenders didn't have a very good season. The same the year before when City won.

Mourinho is determined to put that right by helping Chelsea storm to the title in his first season back.
"I want to attack and try to be dominant," he said.

Deeney, who scored 20 times for the Hornets last season, has begun the new campaign in explosive form netting a hat-trick last week in the 6-1 demolition of Bournemouth.
