Bullion Van Police Escort Shoots Kwara Poly Student

Business activities were paralysed at Muritala Muhammed Road area of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Monday as aggrieved residents protested against the shooting of a Kwara State Polytechnic student by a police escort in a bullion van.
The protest, which later extended to adjoining streets in the area, also resulted in vehicular traffic.
The protesters, including students, made bonfire on major roads in the area, chanting funeral and anti-police slogans.
An eyewitness, Abodunrin John, said the victim was in a taxi when a stray bullet from a policeman in a bullion van hit him.
The bullet allegedly hit Dayo’s left leg.
The policeman was said to be clearing the way for the bullion van allegedly owned by a first generation bank.
The driver of the bullion van was said to have swiftly driven the vehicle out of the troubled area, while some sympathisers carried the victim to a nearby hospital for first aid.
He was later taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for further medical attention.
John said, “Dayo was inside a taxi cab when a policeman in a bullion van, belonging to one of the foremost banks, that was hurriedly blowing siren for free passage, stopped the cab and shot at its tyre.
“Unfortunately for Dayo, who is a student in the Department of Accounting, instead of the bullet destroying the tyre, it hit his leg.”
Meanwhile, our correspondent, who visited the scene, saw a police Armoured Personnel Carrier and some policeman patrolling the troubled area.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Agboola Glover-Oshodi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said the police had restored normalcy in the area.
He stated that the errant policeman had been arrested, adding that the law would take its course.
