Kwara State Government on Tuesday temporarily closed down the Kwara State Polytechnic, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Alhaji Mohammed Lade, has said.
The measure was to stop further students’ protest and to restore normalcy to the campus and some areas in Ilorin, the state capital.
A trigger-happy police corporal who was among the escorts of a bullion van on Monday in an attempt to make for right of way for the bullion van and the escorts, shot a first year National Diploma student of the institution, Ahmed Dayo, on the leg.
The bullion van was said to belong to a first generation bank.
Following the incident, students went on street protest. Though the police managed to restore normalcy, the students later on Tuesday morning regrouped and continued with the protest.
Lade stated that Dayo was not dead but was responding to treatment.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, Mr. Agboola Glover-Oshodi, appealed to the students to remain calm.
He said the trigger-happy policeman had been arrested, adding that the law will take its course.
