WAYNE ROONEY still wants to quit Manchester United.
United boss David Moyes confirmed this week he has met Rooney "three or four times" to discuss his future.
Moyes has also stressed that £240,000-a-week hitman Rooney - who last night flew home from United's pre-season tour with a hamstring injury - is not for sale.
But, crucially, he has swerved the subject of whether Rooney is happy to stay at United.
And Starsport understands Moyes has yet to convince Rooney that his future lies at Old Trafford.
Moyes was expected to use the club's three-week pre-season to have further talks with the unsettled 27-year-old.
But those plans were scuppered when the club revealed last night that Rooney was coming home.
He suffered the injury in training and scans have revealed the full extent of the damage.
A statement said: "Following a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it has been decided Wayne Rooney should return home for further assessment and rehabilitation."
He has been ruled out for a month meaning he will miss the Community Shield on August 11, the season opener against Swansea six days later and the England v Scotland friendly between those two games.
Their hopes of completing the swoop, despite interest from Arsenal, have only increased over the summer and the injury will make no difference to those plans.
They know he has made Chelsea his preferred destination if he quits United, as revealed in Starsport last month.
Moyes is set to go back to the drawing board in his search for midfield reinforcements with playmaker Thiago Alcantara poised to snub United.
Barcelona star Alcantara looks set to be reunited with former boss Pep Guardiola after the Bayern Munich coach declared his interest in the Spanish ace.
Moyes had hoped to wrap up a deal worth £17m for the Italianborn 22-year-old this week only for Guardiola to hijack the move.
"Thiago is the only player I want. It will be him or no one," Guardiola said.
"I don't think that will be a problem. I spoke to the club about my concept and told them why I want Thiago Alcantara."
Candreva, 26, caught the eye of Moyes while on duty with Italy during the Confederations Cup although United face competition from Napoli for his signature.
The Scot's chances of landing Modric are less likely with new Real boss Carlo Ancelotti keen to make the Croatian maestro a key player in his plans.
