A SOLDIER was beheaded in a busy street in broad
daylight yesterday by suspected Islamic terrorists who ordered shocked
witnesses to film the atrocity.
The unnamed squaddie, wearing a Help For Heroes T-shirt, was butchered
close to the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, southeast London.
His crazed killers then prayed beside his body for around 20 minutes, urging passers-by to video what they were doing.
They shouted out that they had hacked off the soldier’s head in revenge for Britain invading their home country – in horrific scenes that might have been seen in Baghdad, Iraq.
They calmly waited for armed police to arrive but both were gunned down after apparently rushing towards the officers waving machetes.
One of the men is believed to have had a gun and fired at police, but then shot his own hand off.
The other ran at a policewoman who shot him before he could reach her.
The terrorists, who screamed: “Allahu Akbar” – meaning “God is great” – were taken to hospital under armed guard.
One was last night in “a serious condition” while the other’s condition was not known.
The dead soldier was said to be in his 20s. It is believed he was on his way for duty at the barracks and had just got off a train from central London at nearby Woolwich Arsenal station a few minutes before he was attacked.
Witnesses said the men, driving a blue Vauxhall, deliberately hit the man and then mounted a kerb, crashing into a signpost.
They jumped out, grabbed the soldier, pinned him against a wall and started stabbing him before dragging his bleeding body on to the main road and beheading him.
Brave passers-by tried to shield the body of the soldier from his killers after he was slashed and hacked.
Eye-witness Frankie Allen, 18, a student, said: “We saw two black men with knives in their hands. They grabbed the Army guy and started chopping at his neck.
“They may have shot him first. They were chopping his head off. They were screaming: ‘You invade our country and we’ll do the same to you.’”
Sonny Allen, 19, added: “They were standing there for 30 minutes and as soon as the police came, they started shooting the police. One of them ran towards a policewoman with a machete. She shot him twice and he fell.”
