ASTON Villa boss Paul Lambert has tied up a deal for Bulgarian star Aleksandar Tonev.

The Lech Poznan winger, who has won 11 caps for his country, is set to join for £2.5m after agreeing a £25,000-a-week deal to move to Villa Park.

Tonev was at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground to complete a medical and finalise personal terms yesterday.

And Villa will be happy with their first piece of business this summer after beating Celtic and German side Werder Bremen to his signature.

The final transfer fee could rise to £3.25m based on appearances and Tonev said: “I’m part of the team and hungry for success.

“I can’t wait to get started and show everyone what I can do.

“As soon as I heard of Villa’s interest, my mind was set on coming here.”

The 23-year-old was recommended to boss Lambert by Bulgarian legend Stiliyan Petrov, now assistant development coach at the club after being forced to retire as he battles leukaemia.

Petrov said: “I’ve played alongside Alek and Villa have an exciting player on their hands.”
