The Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) on Monday called on the National Association of
Nigerian Students (NANS) to step up their activism.
The President of the union, Dr Nasir Isa, while reacting to the recent fatal accident that claimed the lives of some NANS officers, urged the association to compel the government to increase the annual budgetary allocation to the education sector to at least 26 per cent.
Isa said the fate that befell the five officers of the association called for declaration of emergency in the education sector by the Federal Government.
The ASUU chief said that time had come to rebuild the students’ movement to revitalise it to play the historical role, which it once played in the struggle to build a truly free country.
``ASUU invites the students’ movement to re-open issues, including the non-commercialisation of education,'' he said.
The unionist said the common struggle to enthrone democratic governance in Nigeria's tertiary institutions with full respect for the rights of students to unionise must be invigorated.
The five officers of NANs, who lost their lives were on their way to the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom, when they were involved in an accident along the UmuahiaIkot--Ekpene Road.
