The Black Cats have already snapped up Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini and reports in Italy now claim they're heading back to Serie A to strengthen their squad.
Hallfredsson is thought to be a perfect signing for the North-East outfit, who only narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last term.
Sunderland have been active in the transfer window so far this summer, signing up Vito Mannone while making an inquiry for Eintracht Frankfurt full-back, Bastian Oczipka.
